Overview

Daniel D. Balys is a partner in the Real Estate practice group at Greenspoon Marder LLP. Mr. Balys has had the good fortune of working both as in-house and outside counsel for some of the largest and most-respected real estate companies, investment trusts, corporations and businesses in the United States and internationally.

Mr. Balys has deep experience representing investment and commercial banks and other financial institutions in loan originations, loan workouts and restructurings, and note sale transactions that are secured by commercial real estate assets of all kinds, including office buildings, retail properties, hotels, industrial properties, data centers and multi-family properties. He has previously represented lenders in the origination of portfolio loans and loans originated for commercial mortgage-backed securitization programs.

Mr. Balys’ lending practice includes construction, purchase, refinancing and restructuring. He has represented a variety of financial institutions at the senior loan, junior loan, and mezzanine loan levels and in the capacities of administrative agent, co-lender, and lead lender.

Most recently, Mr. Balys has been representing purchasers, sellers, investors, funds and developers in the acquisition, development & disposition of commercial real estate assets; borrowers in commercial real estate and project financings; and tenants and landlords in the leasing of office, retail, and industrial buildings.  He handled and oversaw the entire real estate legal program for a Fortune Global 500 company as outside counsel in its real estate loans to its franchisees; ground leasing, acquisition and disposition of its retail fuel centers; and its disposition of other core real estate assets.

Prior to transitioning to private practice in 2004, Mr. Balys was in-house counsel with Equity Office Properties Trust (the largest publicly traded REIT with over $25 billion dollars in real estate holdings) with respect to the REIT’s acquisition, disposition, financing, and leasing of office buildings.
