Greenspoon Marder Supports the Virgil Hawkins Justice Foundation’s 2018 Legacy Trailblazer Gala
Jun 16, 2018
Orlando, FL – June 16, 2018 – Greenspoon Marder is proud to support the Virgil Hawkins Justice Foundation’s 2018 Legacy Trailblazer Gala. This is the second Legacy Gala to be held by the Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association, and it will be honoring African-American lawyers admitted to The Florida Bar from 1980 through 1989 as its Trailblazers. This distinguished group of African-American lawyers, less than one percent of the total Bar membership at the time, in some instances widened the path and in other instances created new paths that continued to impact where and how African Americans melded into the practice of law in Florida. Truly deserving of this honor, the Trailblazers further diversified the judiciary (more than 30 are current or retired judges); became college presidents; produced the first African-American president of The Florida Bar; and changed the structure of the Florida Legislature with numerous elected officials, among an array of other groundbreaking achievements that have helped pave the way for African-American lawyers of yesterday and today.
Greenspoon Marder partner and Diversity Committee Chair,
Evett Simmons, has been named as one of the Virgil Hawkins Justice Foundation’s 2018 Trailblazers. She concentrates her practice in the areas of estate planning, probate and guardianship administration, and litigation. Ms. Simmons has been awarded honors by a variety of respected organizations, associations, and businesses. Ms. Simmons formerly served as President of the Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter National Bar Association. Recently, she was selected to represent the NBA on the ABA’s newly formed Diversity and Inclusion Center Advisory Council. Additionally, she just completed a term as Chair of The Florida Bar Continuing Legal Education Committee as well as the American Bar Association Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. Ms. Simmons currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Florida Southern College, which, in 2013, named its multicultural center the “Evett L. Simmons Center for Multicultural Awareness”.
