Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – July 17, 2023 – Greenspoon Marder Surrogacy and Assisted Reproductive Technology practice group founder and partner Marla Neufeld was recently interviewed in “The Slow Newscast,” a podcast show from Tortoise, discussing the legal issues surrounding the recent posthumous conception case of Spanish celebrity Ana Obregón. Obregón, at age 68, made headlines as the socialite had a child via surrogacy with the genetics of a donor egg and the sperm of her son, Aless, who passed away three years earlier in 2020 at the age of 27 from cancer. The episode introduces Ms. Neufeld at the 30:39-minute mark as she analyzes the 2019 New York Supreme Court Matter of Zhu, a legal precedent in the field of posthumous reproduction where the parents of deceased West Point cadet Peter Zhu were allowed to retrieve genetic material, specifically sperm, for third party reproduction as their son was dying from a ski accident. The full episode discusses the new frontiers of fertility and reproduction technology, and how it challenges the current ideas and concepts of family, motherhood, and the law.
