Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivered a letter of resignation to White House chief of staff John Kelly.
At 12:44 PM EST, President Donald J. Trump tweeted that he was “pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States.”
Trump did not answer any direct questions about Sessions during his news conference, stating that he was “extremely” satisfied with his cabinet. However, several news media outlets indicate that Sessions’ resignation comes at the direction of President Trump.
