Partner
Jeffrey A. Backman is a partner in the Litigation practice group at Greenspoon Marder LLP and co-chair of the Class Action Defense practice group. Mr. Backman focuses his practice on complex class action defense and general commercial litigation, with a particular focus on consumer statutory claims, such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) litigation. He has defended clients in federal courts throughout the country and is at the forefront of the legal landscape involving the telemarketing industry.
Mr. Backman serves as a trusted advisor on legal compliance and defense strategies before regulatory bodies, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and State Attorneys General. His advisory role ensures that clients are well-prepared to meet regulatory challenges and maintain compliance with complex legal standards.
Early in his career, Mr. Backman defended a large client in the multidistrict litigation involving the manufacture and sale of Chinese drywall, where he was the youngest member of both the state and federal court defense steering committees, also serving as lead and liaison counsel in certain state courts.
Mr. Backman is a sought-after speaker at national conferences, where he shares his insights on TCPA compliance and litigation trends. Notably, he has been a featured speaker at the Professional Association for Customer Engagement (PACE) Summit, providing valuable guidance on the evolving landscape of TCPA regulations.
Recognized for his litigation expertise and leadership, he is among “The Best Lawyers in America” for Commercial Litigation by Best Lawyers® and listed among the “500 Leading Litigators in America” by Lawdragon from 2023-2025. Additionally, he is recognized as a “Litigation Star” in Florida by Benchmark Litigation.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Backman is deeply committed to community service. He is involved with Kids Can, an organization dedicated to empowering children, where his two daughters were founding board members. He has also served in various leadership roles with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and B’nai B’rith Justice Unit throughout his career.

Representative Experience
- Obtained dismissal with prejudice of fraud-based theories of violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Practices Act, urging that Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 9(b) applies. Following dismissal with prejudice, obtaining an affirmance of that ruling before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Secured a major victory for a national insurance provider by successfully defeating class certification in a TCPA lawsuit, reducing potential exposure from $70 million to a single claim.
- Defended a vehicle services company in a TCPA class action, achieving a landmark ruling on a safe harbor defense.
- Defeated class certification in a TCPA lawsuit for a health advisory firm, eliminating more than 9-figures in potential exposure.
- Achieved summary judgment for a cruise line company, reducing class size and defeating vicarious liability claims.
- Defeated class certification for a cruise line, preventing exposure to significant liability from unsolicited text message claims.
- Obtained dismissal of a class action for a management company due to lack of personal jurisdiction.
- Negotiated settlements for cruise and hospitality companies in class action TCPA telemarketing and text message claims.
- Successfully guided a travel company through a class action lawsuit involving TCPA and state law violations.
- Compelled arbitration and settled TCPA claims for a mortgage corporation, resulting in dismissal of all claims.
- Successfully dismissed TCPA and state law claims for travel and cruise companies in multiple jurisdictions.
- Secured an order compelling arbitration for a hospitality company in a case involving vacation ownership interests.
- Successfully represented a health services company in a putative class action, leading to a trial on arbitration agreement validity.
