Navigating Cannabis Businesses through a Complex Legal Landscape

In 1996, Proposition 215 was passed in California, making the state the first state to allow for the medical use of marijuana. Since that time, more than 25 states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation allowing for comprehensive medical marijuana programs with 4 states—Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska—now allowing state-licensed recreational marijuana businesses. Many other states are likely to follow in the near future allowing for both medical and recreational cannabis businesses, creating an environment of rapid growth in the cannabis industry.

Our attorneys are committed to staying apprised of all legal developments impacting the cannabis industry. We monitor changing laws and regulations at the state, federal, and local levels so that our clients have the information they need to operate their companies while meeting the demands of this complex legal landscape. Further, as the cannabis industry becomes more integrated into the commercial landscape, allegations of injury to users or to third parties will arise, as they have against manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and other products. Our experience in advising and litigating on behalf of clients in controversial industries, including a broad knowledge of the scientific and medical issues underlying product liability claims, distinguishes our approach from that of other firms.

Our attorneys believe in taking a creative and proactive approach to the practice of law. We help our clients position their companies to comply with developing laws and regulations while taking full advantage of the business opportunities that are before them.
